The Chagual (Puya Chilensis & Berteroniana) (English)

You've probably seen these plants along the way from Santiago to Viña del Mar or Valparaiso, or in many other spots in the Region of Valparaiso. They are a very rare and important native species of this country, one vulnerable due to the advancement of the human intervention on the natural land. 

The first time I could see one of them in person, I was amazed by how this plant develops such a beautiful structure under such hard conditions. I personally consider it a very rare and marvellous plant, and a natural heritage that we must know and care.

The Chagual is a native plant that can reach up to 2 meters high and that grows in hills, mountains, as well as in coastal hillsides, mostly in Central Chile. The stem (spear) of the flower is eatable; delicious salads and tasty marmalades can be made out of it. It is also used for various natural remedies, specially its gum, produced in the flower peduncles for the bite of the Castnia psittacus butterfly's caterpillar.

This species can be found in many places along the central Chilean coast. Its messy look and its amazing, exotic flowers make it one of the most gorgeous native plants in Chile. However, the first impression can be rather disappointing, since its spear is usually eaten by the Mariposa del Chagual's caterpillar, drying the flowers and giving it a burned-like look. This caterpillar may be considered more like a plague, but once it reaches maturity, pollinates and extends the life of this native species.

Durante los últimos meses nos hemos dedicado a perfeccionar nuestros servicios y a buscar nuevas formas de financiamiento para mejorar y expandirnos. En esta línea, postulamos al Capital Semilla Emprendimiento 2011 y el día de hoy hemos recibido la grata noticia de que hemos sido preseleccionados en la etapa inicial de este fondo. Comenzaremos a trabajar en nuestro plan de negocios y orientaremos este capital, principalmente, para poner en marcha un plan de marketing y promoción que nos permita dar a conocer los servicios a los actores principales del turismo en la región de Valparaíso y agencias de viaje.

Seguiremos trabajando para seguir desarrollando la marca y, por sobre todo, para volcar la idea inicial de posicionar nuevos destinos con opciones concretas e innovadoras de ecoturismo. Estamos en conversaciones con agencias de viajes francesas y pronto tendremos la oportunidad de realizar asociaciones provechosas. Continuamos preparándonos y esperando la primera salida oficial, aunque hemos comprobado que las cosas toman más tiempo de lo que se cree.

Sin embargo, no hay decepción ni falta de ánimo, por el contrario, creemos que falta mucho por hacer y para ello renovamos energía y conocimientos a diario. Pronto vendrán los frutos de este trabajo arduo y perseverante.

Vamos! Oficial.

Estamos muy contentos de haber salido a ofrecer nuestros servicios por los hostales de Valparaíso y también por conocer a las personas relacionadas al ámbito del turismo que nos dieron y han dado su apoyo y energía.

Desde hoy damos el vamos oficial a la empresa y esperamos el mayor de los éxitos para este proyecto. Se viene mucho trabajo, pero es grato poder comenzar una nueva aventura, al igual que las que invitamos a compartir.

Nuestras salidas serán constantes durante los fines de semana de marzo, pero existe la posibilidad de realizarlas si existen grupos suficientes.

Desde hoy Bato Explora se encuentra oficialmente inaugurada.
